No-Bake Peach Cobbler

You think I’m a fearless, courageous woman living on my own in Ecuador, huh? Listen to this letter I wrote to a male friend at midnight:

I’m camping up above in the grass hut, right? And I heard a little body jump down from the trees, and TIko’s barking, and we’re staring down a guanchaca with my flashlight, who’s growling at Tiko and Tiko is backing down. What do I do? Throw rocks at it? I don’t want him to come in my hut and we both feel trapped. He looks really scary and mean and wild. I have food in here. Potatoes and rice and stuff.

He wrote … you should be safe unless he has rabies .
They do not move very fast but be sure her babies are not near you that would be the only reason he would be aggressive if he does not have Rabies.. I Just got this email I see you sent it 7 hours ago I Imagine your Ok by now..

D – Oh, ,ha ha, I feel like such a camping wimp, being scared like that.
But he looked like that creature from Harry Potter, or the Hobbit- Gollum, and he/she
was staring at me with those black, beady eyes. in the pitch dark, with no intention of moving.

I’ll bet it was a mom, like you said, since she was growling at Tiko so fiercely and wouldn’t budge.
I wonder what I could do to scare it away next time.
I’m glad I didn’t throw rocks at it, Now that you say it’s safe. Plus I couldn’t dredge up any rock-throwing anger.
Dorothy.

  1. Pretty much every animal is afraid of fire – but, say, a road flare is maybe not the best approach in a grass hut (but I would keep a couple of those on hand anyway). I’d suggest one of those 12″ long Bic barbecue lighters – a good way to keep an animal at a distance, or make it go away, without getting close to it. A super-bright flashlight might also be good – which you should have anyway, of course – but the 12″ long Bic lighter might be the cheapest and most effective way…

    1. OH, my gosh, good one! Thanks, Kev! I was just drinking my last lemon probiotic tea, this minute, and thinking of you.
