“That’s courage,” I said. There was a man in the park, a man well-known in Vilcabamba, and dying. He’d asked that people come to say goodbye to him, if they wish, in the park while he sat/laid on the bench. A person was saying to me, “Ï admire your courage, Dorothy. To live alone, to live without windows, without fear. ” Well, I just decided, after my first 2-3 days living alone and hearing all the scare stories, thinking of the possibilities of bad things that could happen to me. I just decided, that’s no way to live! Things can happen to you anywhere. So I will surround myself with light every night and not think about all the bad things that could happen. That’s not a good way to live. So as we stood up from our park bench I pointed to the man saying goodbye to all his friends. “Now, that’s courage.”
